Pain, conflict, emptiness, sickness, hatred, war, death. Longing for love, peace and joy, these are the brutal realities that we often face instead. When we slow down long enough to think, we can’t help but wonder why. The Bible offers a unique answer.
God made it. An all-powerful God created paradise for humanity to enjoy in relationship with Him. As a father loves his children, God created us that He might express His love for us as well as see us return it and spread it throughout His creation.
We broke it. With an offer of paradise and the love of our Creator, humanity chose temptation instead. We traded our innocence and purity for independence, fear and shame and invited the consequences of sin that we see in our world today.
Jesus fixed it. Having broken what God made, humanity’s next greatest temptation was to believe that we could rebuild it ourselves. But with our backs turned to God, no amount of morality, achievement, or religion could undo the consequences of our sin. In love, God became man and came into our world to rescue us. Jesus lived the perfect life we failed to live and then died on the cross as a criminal in our place. He died our death so that we might live His life. But Jesus doesn’t rescue people who would prefer to save themselves.
By faith we receive it. We receive by faith, the salvation Jesus died to provide. We don’t earn God’s forgiveness nor are we worthy of it. It’s His gift to give and we receive it as we turn from our sin and trust in Jesus as our Saviour and welcome Him as our Lord. This is the good news that the Bible proclaims and it is our joy as a church to embrace and share.
